Alright, I’m going to try to get one big post in today before I leave for Austin, TX this weekend. Hopefully I’ll have a nice time with moe. on Friday (No longer at Stubb’s BBQ, moved to La Zona Rosa), some golf on Saturday, and a wedding on Sunday. We’ll see how it goes. Until then I’ve got plenty of links:
- Pitchfork Media has a rather good article about Best Buy’s Indie music deals that might stop me from purchasing that sort of music there, which is a strong statement since I’m a former employee and fan of the store typically.
- The Killers are being sued by their former manager. Smile Like You Mean It guys, that $16 million might hurt.
- iTunes passes the billionth sale. They’re on the fast track to McDonalds’ numbers.
- Sweet post by gorilla vs. bear about Oh No! Oh My! Very cheery.
- Justin over at Aquarium Drunkard has once again posted an incredible Ryan Adams release, today’s was the unreleased album 48 Hours.
- Thanks to OrangeYeti‘s recent post, you too can now make fun of hippies and bad metal bands.

Finally, a big one for you all to check out. Go to Paste Magazine and vote for the 100 Best Living Songwriters. The link to vote is on the bottom right of the page under contests. The results will be released in their June issue. I’m going to suggest that you vote for this man right here, since he’s one of the better and more unknown artists on the list, since I have a vaguely personal indirect relationship to him. His name is Daniel Hutchens. He was a member of Bloodkin and has written quite a few Widespread Panic songs, aka the current southern rock kings. Yeah I’ll say it. Anyways, here’s a couple of his tracks, I’m looking forward to hearing more on an upcoming album this year…..
Daniel Hutchens – Thrill You.
Daniel Hutchens – Shebang Delang.
Daniel Hutchens – Sensible Shoes.
Also, if any of you are interested, here were my twenty picks:
- Bob Dylan
- Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, RatDog)
- Bruce Hornsby
- Daniel Hutchens (Bloodkin, Solo, writing for Widespread Panic)
- David Byrne (Talking Heads)
- Eric Clapton (Cream, Derek & The Dominoes, Blind Faith, Solo)
- Flaming Lips
- J.J. Cale
- Jack Johnson
- Jeff Tweedy (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo)
- John Bell (Widespread Panic)
- John Mayer
- Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal)
- Outkast (Andre Benjamin, Antwan Andre Patton)
- Rivers Cuomo (Weezer)
- Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN)
- The Roots
- Ryan Adams (Solo, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Whiskeytown)
- Trey Anastasio (Phish, Trey Anastasio Band, Trey Anastasio and 70 Volt Parade, Oysterhead)
- Write-In Vote for Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, Probot)
I know for sure I’m going to get some heckling for my Jack Johnson and John Mayer picks, but I’d like to hear what everyone else had, so all of you go vote and include your 20 artists and a little commentary in the comments, please.

lookin’ tough
I personally would have put McCartney on that list. His last four albums have been consistently good.
Ya but Weir and Trey don’t really write their songs, I mean they write the music, but not lyrics.
Fair enough, and I’d put Robert Hunter or Tom Marshall up there in a second for lyricists, but this was my only way to get The Dead up there on the charts, and Trey more than compensates for not writing that many lyrics.
