Summer Camp Artist #03 – Coal Train

by Kane on March 19, 2006

Third in our Summer Camp Artist Series is Coal Train, a Southern-Illinois based bluegrass trio. They’ve got an approach to bluegrass you don’t see from a lot of the Jam Band scene usuals and just enough twang for anyone to enjoy, ‘cuz you can’t get enough twang. They’re going to be more than a little hot at Summer Camp this year, though, considering their dress code: “They pride in true bluegrass tradition by fashioning themselves in suits and ties on stage, but when the place heats up, the coats come off and the ties loosen!” We’ll see how long that lasts. I’ve got 5 tracks from their 2004 release, and I’m a fan. They’re good. I recommend “Swingin’.” It’s quite different from the rest of the tracks, but it’s definitely got it’s own feel that you need to hear.

From Moving Out (2004)

#1 Slowly Away (2:18)
#2 Forget About Yesterday (4:10)
#3 New Rochelle (2:44)
#4 Windy River (2:34)
#5 Half is Wrong (2:34)
#6 Way Back Home (4:18)
#7 Moving Out (2:46)
#8 Swingin’ (4:05)
#9 Do My Senses Lie (3:47)
#10 Said and Done (9:43)

From 2006 Demos:

“Bit Of String”
“Donna Colby”

Oh, man? Do I get to go to this thing? Probably not, but you know I bought a bluegrass type album last summer. and for the life of me, can’t remember the name of the band….but this one is the same. Coal Train? Anyway, these guys I like in a “Bluegrass” way. Not into it all the time, but these guys rock.
Love it. Can’t believe my son would have this on his website. You go guy.
And of course let me know about this “festival” I probably won’t be able to go to.
Dad
