Summer Camp Artist #07 – The Brakes

by Kane on April 5, 2006

So do you know that H&R Block Taxcut commercial where the musicians sit there playing in a warehouse/basement-type living area and all of their equipment gets deducted by little green arrows? You know, this one, same as the picture above? Well the band featured in that commercial is The Brakes, who also happen to be the 7th artist in our Summer Camp Artist Series. The Philadelphia five-piece formed in 2001 and have since developed an extensive touring history, if not an extensive recording one. Unfortunately they only have two EP’s available right now, but after the recent commercial I’d be surprised if they didn’t have a full-length release out within a year from now. They’ve got a good bluesy sound with clean vocals and instrumentals that bring out a good sound for their style, that first release should do well commercially with a decent label behind them.

I’ve got both a live show as well as the single “Special” that’s featured on the commercials, and you can always get more info/tourdates/merch/etc. from their website as well as their MySpace page. Enjoy the tracks.

From their EP – Volume 1 release:

Hey. The Brakes. I love this band. First song I pulled up was Bittersweet, and I’m thinking old school….reo speedwagon, maybe savoy brown, even allman brothers. It’s like a “gumbo” lots of things in there. And I like them. I looked at the pics on their website….and these are Young guys. They sound older than their years, and listening to the other songs? In my opinion, they have staying power…never sure in the state of the music business….and I’m no expert.
But I like these guys. So, that’s probably the “kiss of death” on them. Sorry if so. Whatever.
