Rockin' The World Cup #02 – The U.K.

by Kane on June 10, 2006

So here we have the lovely United Kingdom, home to crumpets, tea, and wierd food. OK, a couple of those might be stereotypes and slightly ignorant American assumptions, but we’re all human. Anyhew, England has one of the most publicized soccer leagues that Americans see. How many of us that don’t follow soccer have any idea about the Spanish or Italian or South American or African leagues, really? We know Arsenal, Manchester United, and that’s about it. Oh and we know Beckham *used* to be there. Anyways, here’s some music.

The Clash – London Burning. An obvious classic. Personal preference dictates that I choose this track over “London Calling,” but both are gems.

The Pogues – London Girl. Though The Pogues are technically an Irish band, I’m sure there was more than one occasion when all the chaps hopped the Irish Sea to spend a night at London’s finest establishments in search of a lady friend. Great song, timeless Irish folk-rock, can’t beat it.

Tricky, using an Irish band for England. But it could have been worse, like using Scottish crap singer Rod Stewart …
