Vegoose 2006 Initial Lineup

by Kane on August 9, 2006

Vegoose 2006 Artists have finally been announced. Here they are:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Widespread Panic
The Killers
The Mars Volta
The Keller Williams Incident
The Black Crowes
Fiona Apple
The Raconteurs
Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley
Medeski Martin & Wood
The Roots
The Rhythm Devils feat. Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman, Mike Gordon & Steve Kimock
G. Love & Special Sauce
Jurassic 5
Galactic
Praxis
Yonder Mountain String Band
Gomez
Built To Spill
Guster
Jim James of My Morning Jacket
Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith
Band of Horses
Jamie Lidell
The Zutons

While I like the lineup, I don’t know if it justifies going… Last year’s lineup was just so awesome that this may not be enough for me. My thoughts:

Keeping WSP: great idea.

Adding MMW, YMSB, The Rhythm Devils, Guster, Jurassic 5, and The Roots: awesome idea.

Adding Fiona Apple: enough to make me not attend. I’ve seen her live and it was the *worst* performance I believe I’ve ever seen by anyone over the age of 16.

Unlike 2005, I’m not a fan of a number of these “indie” artists. Last year’s selection was great, this year’s… let’s just say I don’t think it’s worth it to me.

Any other rumours/thoughts/commentary?

Ha. I attended that Fiona Apple meltdown with you. I heard she’s all grown up now though. Heard an excerpt of her new stuff and an interview on public radio. I don’t recall whether I liked it or not though. Senility maybe, or just un-memorable, not sure which. Either way, it sounded like she sort of got her act together after a layoff.
And to be honest? I’m not sure what I think of Tom Petty anymore. He’s produced some great stuff over the years….I guess I just got sort of burned out on it. Not a huge fan of his particular voice. That might be more a reflection on my tastes than his music. I’ve had an album or two of his that I liked.

I don’t know who half the others are. I’m just more excited about the unknowns and up and coming ones these days. New blood if you will. What the world doesn’t need is more $150 tickets for bands who’ve been going through the motions for 30years.

So…..keep turning me on to the new stuff, new finds. I won’t like them all, but I’m willing to hear it. Thank god there are tons of good bands still out there making their mark, as hard as it is to do. When I hear one…and you’ve turned me on to a lot of them?????? It pretty much makes my day, knowing there are people out there still creating wonderful stuff.

These festivals seem to bring in loads of them. Some seem focused on one type of music, others seem to bring it all on. This one seems more like the latter from what I can tell. These acts seem more varied in style, but then I haven’t heard a lot of them. Variety might be the spice of life…but too much dilutes the attraction of all.

IMHO.

That lineup looks pretty amazing. I would probably pay just to see the Mars Volta, Damian Marley, The Raconteurs, G. Love, The Roots and Jurassic 5 unless it was over sixty bucks or something.
