Covers That I Like Better Than The Originals

Guster does The Talkinbrg Heads

Guster doing Talking Heads‘ “(Nothing But) Flowers”

Original:Talking Heads – (Nothing But) Flowers
Cover: Guster – (Nothing But) Flowers

I fell in love with the Guster version from Guster Live On Ice before I ever learned it was a Talking Heads song. That’s probably the only reason I like the cover better than the original. And the Guster version is more danceable.

The vast majority of the bands that I really love all do great covers. Even bands I don’t like so much anymore, but used to love, do great covers.

Nuclear Assault – Good Times Bad Times
Dead Kennedys – I Fought The Law
Metallica – the entire first Garage Days EP
Pearl Jam – Dock of the Bay, I Am a Patriot
-
Gov’t Mule – so many, but I’m listening to Hunger Strike > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hunger strike right now and it’s SO great..
Warren Haynes – It Hurts Me Too
Umphrey’s McGee – again so many but Jessica is so much fun live
The Black Crowes – Space Captain

oh here’s a great fucked up one – Tiffany – Talk Dirty to Me (yes, THAT Tiffany).

I can’t say that I don’t like the Guster cover of the song. I really like Guster…and it’s probably my favorite Talking Heads song. But I don’t find the two different enough. I suppose I like my covers to add something to the song that’s being covered…a new style or twist…something. But it’s still a great band covering a great song. Can’t go wrong with that.
