Cavefest 2007 Photoset

Friday night, firedancers to the left of the main stage were a big hit, and under the right settings, make for beautiful photographs. Click on the photos to see the entire weekend on flickr, with many more firedancer shots as well.

A very large hill takes you from the main camping area to the stage, and moments before catching your first glimpse of the stage, a sign welcomes you: “Hello! Waited over 1,000,000 years to see you.”

Moments after the sign, here you are. The stage is under the cave, and you can see the white tent where the sound booth is facing the stage. All in all a very beautiful scene both during the day and at night, with proper lighting of course.

More pictures and commentary after the jump…

Here you can see the quite hobbled together looking stage up closer.

This is the view looking out of my tent. Not bad…

Gettin’ a little artistic on a hike. Perfect for an REI advertisement if you ask me. This one was taken by my girlfriend.

This is a pond we would walk by on the way from the main stage to our tent. It’s been a little color adjusted and the pond is normally murky but less brown. Notice the bridge at the far end of the pond.

A closer image of the same bridge from the picture above, featuring my girlfriend napping on it. The bluffs all through the little canyon were very cool, and the main stage was nestled right in the valley under one of the bluffs.

Finally, the only musical shot I took that I even bothered to upload. This is Cornmeal on Saturday night.

There’s a reason that I took so few photos of any of the bands. Frankly, most weren’t that good or the crowd just was too wierd. Being such a small festival in such a remote area, quite a few wierdos showed up in addition to the usual set of hippies. Made for some bad vibes if you ask me, since most were there to get drunk and find some drugs. Next add in the fact that they were having sound problems all weekend. Vince Herman actually played two or three songs on Friday night, and got pissed enough at their sound issues to just walk offstage and leave. Considering he was one of the two bands I was there to see, you can imagine I experienced some dissappointment.

All in all, the $17 ticket was worth it for the scenery, a good camping weekend with some good hiking, wine, and cigars, and the occasional songs up at the main stage. If you’re looking for more music-centric regional festivals, you’re better off heading up north to Wisconsin and Minnesota, whose offerings are far better than Cavefest’s.

1,000,000 years? But the bible says earth is only a few thousand years old, how can that be?

    (sarcasm)

Joking aside, that looks like a fantastic place. If I’m ever near Murphysboro, IL I’ll be sure to check it out.

Yeah, you’d really be surprised how beautiful Southern Illinois can be. Definitely worth the short drive for some pretty awesome camping/hiking. If you do ever make the trip down, though, I recommend stopping at some of the local wineries that are surprisingly popular down there. And if you’re into trail running, there are some pretty sweet races in that region over the summer and early fall. Okay, now that Frommer’s scared for his job, I’ll stop.

But, Kane’s right. Not your typical hippies last weekend. Less of a Kumbaya feeling, that’s for sure. In fact, it confirmed the 4/20 post that there is a clear distinction between hippies and stoners. I have a feeling more people were down there to celebrate the 4/20 weekend amongst fellow druggies than for the actual music. Bad vibes, bad vibes…

Oh, and Kane, good post. And thanks for a great bday weekend.

man i was in tough shape that whole weekend haha. Vince didn’t walk off because of the sound, the power went out , something shorted or got disconnected and the PA system shut down, that’s why he left stage, it took awhile to fiix and by the time they did get it running again there wasn’t a great deal of time left so he played short. I talked to Vince when he showed up in the afternoon he had a bad cold and was feeling like shit so he was probaably relieved to get a little break.
yeh there were some weird folks and situations, but 10 times as many good vibes and good kids.
the Solstice Fest there was fun too, less people and a better community vibe.
