10KLF Showcases - Family Groove Company

Friday, August 4th, 2006

It’s about time I took a second to share some of 10KLF’s music with you rather than just babbling about it and telling you where to get it. I decided - like Summer Camp - to start off with some Family Groove Company, seein’ as they’re one of my favorites and all. Sadly John and I walked in during the closing notes of “New Speedway Boogie” at 10,000 Lakes on Thursday, which happens to be one of my favorite Family Groove Co. live tunes, and one of the very few Grateful Dead covers that I consider better than the original. There’s only two in fact; Family Groove Company playing “New Speedway Boogie” and Sublime playing “Scarlet Begonias.” If that isn’t testament enough, check out their cover of Sugarloaf’s “Green Eyed Lady,” a great intro by the stage guy oddly enough (my friend Vanessa gets mentioned), the great new title track off their new album, The Charmer, and their cover of Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles.”

Vince Herman: “Song Finder,” not “Song Writer”

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

A little something here by Vince Herman, The man behind the magic of Leftover Salmon and Great American Taxi. Here’s him with some other guys discussing improvisation and The Everyone Orchestra and some other crazy stuff.  From the 10KLF Mailing List:

Relix’s Cold Turkey podcast came to 10KLF and captured this 10,000 Lakes Festival improvisational song created on the spot by Vince Herman during a backstage interview/song session. Download it now and some of Cold Turkey’s other 10KLF podcast features including interviews and songs with members of SCI, Railroad Earth, and another song from Vince.

Arrrfhhhhghghh… What’s the deal 10K tapers? It’s like four days later and I see 5 shows uploaded. It’s not the irregular speed that’s bothering me, it’s the possibility that they just might not be uploaded at all. And that would be horrendous.

Anyways, check out the 10,000 Lakes 2006 download page for links to SCI, Mike & The Duo, Keller Williams Incident, Cornmeal, and Umphrey’s McGee.

UPDATE 4:30PM Wed: Raq’s late night is now available.

UPDATE 11:42PM Wed: G.R.A.B. (Billed as Trey Anastasio) and Phil Lesh & Friends are now available, meaning all of the Main Stage shows from the weekend have been uploaded, except O.A.R. But who cares about that show… ;o)

UPDATE 11:50AM Thur: Hot Buttered Rum’s Lake Sallie Campground Stage show is now available in FLAC only on Archive.org.

UPDATE 11:09AM Sat: U-Melt, Family Groove Company, Railroad Earth, and alternate recordings of Phil Lesh and SCI are all available for download now.

UPDATE 1:30AM Aug 01:  More Keller and Hot Buttered Rum for you.

10KLF

1300 miles, 5 days, and 4 tanks of gas later, we’re back. The sun was in full force this weekend, the glowsticks were flying, and the crowd vibes were the best of any festival I’ve seen yet. The entire weekend culminated into a full 4 hour G.R.A.B. set as many expected, including a nearly 30 minute fireworks display while the band jammed out to The Who’s “Who Are You?” and an encore of The Beatles’ “Get Back.” There’s plenty more to talk about so let’s start at Thursday.

This post is part of my coverage of the Festival both for BurningOak.com as well as LiveMusicBlog.com. You can read the rest of the Thursday review here at LiveMusicBlog.
