Early Summer Camp Coverage

Summer Camp 2007

I pulled back into Urbana this morning after an exciting weekend in Chillicothe, IL, at Summer Camp 2007. Despite some inclement weather throughout the weekend and an unfortunate car accident along the way, it was a great weekend of music living up to all of my expectations for Summer Camp in the past. There are already some torrents showing up which I will be tracking here, and some news coverage from the local Peoria newspaper, including a police report (there was some heavier police presence than previous SC’s), and some coverage of Les Claypool’s activity, the events surrounding Summer Camp almost not returning to Chillicothe, and a report on the festivalgoers.

In the meantime until I get some more coverage up, enjoy some photos. My full photos from the festival can be found at Flickr.

SXSW: Bishop Allen @ Schuba’s Day

sxsw schubas day party poster

Alright, many server issues aside I can get back to my SXSW coverage. After heading out from seeing The Teeth we walked across the street to the Schuba’s 11th Annual SXSW Roundup. I still can’t figure out what a Chicago venue is doing throwing parties in Austin, but all the power to them. I only managed to catch Bishop Allen out of their whole lineup, but I snagged some pictures below and enjoyed the show. After reading endless commentary on them at YANP I figured they had to have something going on. Check out the MP3 from their site and the pictures I snagged below:

Summer Camp News

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Just a little clarification on some recent news.  Vince Herman, guitarist and singer for Great American Taxi and Leftover Salmon, will again be the MC for Summer Camp 2007, not just a performer.  Past Summer Camp attendees will recall his shenanigans as some of the better memories of the festival, I know I do.  He’ll be manning the main stage in between the standard headliner sets from moe., Umphrey’s McGee, and whoever else gets the main stage gigs.  According to the Great American Taxi newsletter:

“We were also just added to Summer Camp 2007 in Chillicothe, IL.  The band will play on Saturday and we will be there all weekend while Vince MCs the festival.   FESTIVAL!”

If you haven’t seen or heard Great American Taxi, I assure you, it’s well worth your time.  They played one of the best non-main stage sets of 10,000 Lakes 2006, hands down.  I’m off to work, Peace.

Summer Camp Artist Update #2

Summer Camp Skyscraper

The entire Summer Camp Festival site got a facelift yesterday, and those who plan to be in attendance got a treat as well, some new artists:

Galactic
The Wood Brothers
Hot Buttered Rum
Melissa Ferrick
Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO)
Great American Taxi
Vince Herman
Brother’s Past

Toubab Krewe
Pnuma Trio
Bump

Any thoughts on the new additions? I’m very excited about the return of ALO. Galactic should be a good dance party. But, most importantly, Vince Herman, 2006 Summer Camp MC and 2006 10KLF badass, is returning, not only by himself apparently, but with his *amazing* band, Great American Taxi. These guys are a must-see, hands down.
