Scanning across eMusic’s wares today I stumbled upon an album called Barnyard Blonde by Peach Truck Republic. On a whim I added it to the queue, and I’m experiencing it for the first time as I sit here and write to you. Apparently these guys have been hanging around Fort Worth, TX, since 1993. They’ve got their act together if I’ve ever seen it. They’ve got the live sets down, their studio work could hold it’s own against any jamband or acoustic/folk/blues indie act I’ve listened to, and frankly I can’t find a damn thing I don’t like about the band.

I decided I’d go ahead and share some of their live tunes from Archive.org since they have a penchant for channeling the Dead that is remarkable. If you don’t believe me, listen to the jamming in “Franklin’s Tower.” This is better than some renditions I’ve heard by Phil Lesh & Friends… In addition I’ve included a few studio tracks from Barnyard Blonde. The live show is from Belle Isle Brewery in Oklahoma City, OK, in January 2006. Enjoy the tunes and let me know what you think, I’m really excited about these guys. Oh, and as an added bonus, I’ve got the poster from the show, so now you can add fancy artwork for your iPod.

I’d be a liar if I said I was a huge fan, and I’d be a liar if I said I’d ever heard anything but this show, but regardless, Papa Grows Funk and members of The Neville Brothers Band rip it up during this soundboard recording, so check it out. My favorites are the “Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again” part of the medley during set one and the “Mardi Gator” closer for the second set. Enjoy.

So my experience with New Riders of the Purple Sage is pretty much limited to a couple standards I heard my dad spinnin’ as a kid and that it originated as a side project of Jerry’s. That right there is enough for me to go looking for more though, and this happens to be the best example I came across on Archive.org that has the songs I knew previous to checking this out, “Panama Red,” “Take A Letter Maria”. I recommend those two, “Little Old Lady” was exceptionally delightful for such a country vibe. Also check out the exceptionally long jams on “Portland Woman.” In addition, check out the first 30 seconds or so of “Henry,” as one of the band members dedicates the song as such:

“We’re gonna keep on dedicating this song, to anyone in the audience who smuggles dope for a living. For about as long as it takes for us all to get out there and vote all those silly laws out of the way, man. This is silly, we must have all been smoking something the last time we had a chance to vote any of them silly laws against smoking something out of the way. So here we go, this is dedicated to us and everbody that smokes dope and smuggles dope and everything until we can get those silly laws out of the way man.”

Everyone’s favorite 45-minute-song-playing jam band is swinging through Chambana for a two-night run starting tonight, so I thought I’d post the show from when the band was last in town. I wasn’t extremely impressed with the show at the time, as it was my first, but in retrospect with a greater feel for the band’s catalogue under my belt, this was a good one. The “Tailspin” > “Meat” was incredibly long, coming in at over 40 minutes as I recall, the majority of which was “Meat.” The “Opium” > “32 Things” > “New York City” was also very solid, with a great jam and teases during “32 Things.”

I’m always posting live shows that are hosted by Archive.org, so I figured I’d make it a standard title for future posts. So here it is, the first Archive Live, featuring everyone’s favorite, Tenacious D. If you thought yesterday’s banter from that live Ryan Adams show was good, check this out. Two comedians with guitars in hand rocking out is a sure thing, and the sound on this recording is good, too. It’s got a plethora (read: “crapload”) of vocal and quick guitar runs, so that show isn’t quite as long as it looks, but it conveniently fits on one CD. There’s also a number of great originals on here that you won’t hear on the band’s album, I especially like “Cosmic Shame,” and “Sax-a-boom” is pretty bitchin’. Enjoy.
