Adams performed at subsequent outings of Phil Lesh and Friends, including a two-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, Colorado and on New Year’s Eve 2005 at the Bill Graham Event Center in San Francisco.
So, one of my absolute favorite sources for live shows online posted another gem today: A collection of Ryan Adams live recordings chronicling his covers of the Grateful Dead. It appears to have been compiled by Chris Goodwin over at RyanAdamsArchive.com. Adams fans will recall him playing a number of shows with Phil Lesh in the past, but this is a 2-disc collection of highlights from his shows with Phil Lesh, with The Cardinals, and his solo work. The first disc has been posted and the 2nd disc will be posted next week. Here’s what we’ve got so far:

RYAN ADAMS
Ryan Is Dead: Ryan Adams performs The Grateful Dead [no label, 2CD]
Selection compiled by Chris Goodwin (goodwin1970 (at) verizon.net). More good stuff at www.ryanadamsarchive.com. Almost all soundboard.

“Adams befriended Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, after first meeting him at the Jammys awards in New York in 2005. The two performed Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter’s Grateful Dead classic, Wharf Rat. Adams performed at subsequent outings of Phil Lesh and Friends, including a two-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, Colorado and on New Year’s Eve 2005 at the Bill Graham Event Center in San Francisco. Throughout 2006, Lesh’s live performances included compositions by Adams, including several from Cold Roses (Cold Roses, Let It Ride, and Magnolia Mountain).”

There are three or four songs here without Phil Lesh. When Adams do these Dead tunes, his band the Cardinals’ enthusiasm make them different from the Dead’s style of controlled majesty, knowing how to build a song quietly until it reaches maximum intensity. Franklin’s Tower departs from Dead territory and sounds like an indie rock song.

This is a splendid collection with great sound. Thanks go to Chris Goodwin who made this compilation and xxxballion who shared it.

With Halloween concert season coming up soon it seems everyone is getting geared up for their own show plans. My personal plans for Halloween 2009 include Festival 8, however, just a few years back I spent my Halloween at Vegoose in 2005, and managed to catch what turned out to be an amazing show by String Cheese Incident – complete with a nearly half hour long cover of “Thriller” before it was the cool thing to do. It seems that the band was equally happy with the results of their many Halloween shows, because they’re releasing Trick or Treat – the Best of String Cheese Incident’s Halloween shows on October 27, 2009.

It looks like the album is available for preorder on a 2-disc CD and well as a vinyl edition, and the band will also be releasing a premium edition 9-disc set for the hardcore fans. Curiously enough, the 10/29/2005 show in Las Vegas seems to have been snubbed by this release, even though it served as the band’s Halloween show that year. Take a look at the following track listing and press release and scroll down to download and preview some audience-recorded versions of the tracks that will end up on the album:

Track Listing:

Artist: Rodriguez
Album: Cold Fact
Label: Light In The Attic

I got wind of this vinyl reissue today from the folks at Light In The Attic, a record label in my newly adopted home of Seattle, and I thought checking out the album would be a good way to get acquainted with the happenings in my new scene.

The album, originally released in 1970, slides back and forth between a Motown vibe during tracks like “Sugar Man” and “I Wonder” and psychedelic rock à la The Doors in “Only Good For Conversation.” Rodriguez even managed to pioneer long-phrased song titles such as “This Is Not A Song, It’s An Outburst: Or, The Establishment Blues” before Panic at the Disco were even conceived. “I Wonder” is a particularly catchy track R&B-flavored ballad, and like the rest of the album it leaves you wondering where Quentin Tarantino dropped the ball in not featuring a Rodriguez track in any of his movies.

More information on Rodriguez and the album release can be found on Light In The Attic’s Rodriguez page, which has more information on the 180-gram LP and CD reissues of the album. Until then, here’s the opening track to the album:

Â

It’s been a long time since I have contributed to the Contrast Podcast. For those who don’t know, it’s something of a meta-podcast of music bloggers. If you take a look at the blogroll on the sidebar of the website, you can see just how extensive the list of contributers has become. The theme of podcast #63 happens to be a song chain. Three different podcasts were made, starting here, proceeding to here, and ending in our current episode.

If you haven’t caught on, Person A picks a song, Person B picks a song based off of the previous song, etc, etc. The song preceeding mine was The Walker Brothers, “Deadlier Than The Male”, picked by ZB from So the wind won’t blow it all away. While I know nothing of The Walker Brothers, whose music sounds like a theme song from a long lost James Bond movie, I do know of The Walker Brothers Pancake House, in the Chicago suburbs where I grew up. My immediate reaction: Jack Johnson’s “Banana Pancakes.”

While these podcasts are always unique and interesting due to Tim’s editing and the wide variety of music and contributers, this episode is particularily fun to listen to because of everybody’s explanation of why they picked the song they did. Without further stalling, here’s what you need:

Quickly after Gina Lee & The Brisket Boys left the stage, Megan Melara walked on and began her set. She had a very good vibe and performed nearly all originals if I recall correctly, with the exception of a wonderful rendition of Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah.” I did manage to find a copy of her song entitled “Back Home” to share with you. Take a listen and make sure to find her website and myspace and say hello. Also, load up the mp3 player at her site and give that cover of “Hallelujah” a listen.

After awaking with something of a dry throat Friday after quite an enjoyable Thursday evening, my hosts and I headed to Flipnotics coffee shop where they were both playing. Since I haven’t mentioned so far, I was staying with my cousin Sweet Basil McJagger, organist for The Derailers, and his wife Gina Lee, Austin’s finest yodelist. If they’re actually referred to as yodelists, that is. The two of them were playing with a few others as Gina Lee & The Brisket Boys, and they’re always an enjoyable set. I’ve got an mp3 here of Gina Lee singing as well as pictures from the show, click to check out the rest of the pictures at flickr. The song, “Why I’m Walking,” is off of a recent Bloodshot Records compilation dedicated to Wanda Jackson.

From Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson:

After catching the last of Bishop Allen’s set we headed towards the downtown region across the river to Antone’s to get in line for the Booker T & The MGs show around 6. Little did we know they would let us stand in line until 7:30 before making us aware that it was a badges only show, and we had zero chance of getting in. We were even 15th in line. Ugh, oh well, I did manage to snap a shot of some ridiculous “manpri’s:”

Click for more Flickr photos.

Manpri’s aside, we walked next door to a nice lil’ hookah bar called Red Fez, where we caught a few good songs by Afrofreque (you can listen at their MySpace), a very solid jazzy hip-hop act.

Click for more Flickr photos.

As is the theme of SXSW it was time to keep moving along, stopping at many a random bar for many a random beer with my hosts for the week. From left, Gina Lee, Sweet Basil of The Derailers, and yours truly:

Click for more Flickr photos.

Musically the rest of the night wasn’t too eventful, some random bands not necessarily memorable and not necessarily by their own fault.

Next up: Friday morning starts off with both of the above hosts playing as Gina Lee & The Brisket Boys (Website) at Flipnotics, and continues with some of my favorite shows of the week later in the afternoon. Stay tuned…

Alright, many server issues aside I can get back to my SXSW coverage. After heading out from seeing The Teeth we walked across the street to the Schuba’s 11th Annual SXSW Roundup. I still can’t figure out what a Chicago venue is doing throwing parties in Austin, but all the power to them. I only managed to catch Bishop Allen out of their whole lineup, but I snagged some pictures below and enjoyed the show. After reading endless commentary on them at YANP I figured they had to have something going on. Check out the MP3 from their site and the pictures I snagged below:
