Summer Camp News

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Just a little clarification on some recent news.  Vince Herman, guitarist and singer for Great American Taxi and Leftover Salmon, will again be the MC for Summer Camp 2007, not just a performer.  Past Summer Camp attendees will recall his shenanigans as some of the better memories of the festival, I know I do.  He’ll be manning the main stage in between the standard headliner sets from moe., Umphrey’s McGee, and whoever else gets the main stage gigs.  According to the Great American Taxi newsletter:

“We were also just added to Summer Camp 2007 in Chillicothe, IL.  The band will play on Saturday and we will be there all weekend while Vince MCs the festival.   FESTIVAL!”

If you haven’t seen or heard Great American Taxi, I assure you, it’s well worth your time.  They played one of the best non-main stage sets of 10,000 Lakes 2006, hands down.  I’m off to work, Peace.

Summer Camp Artist Update #2

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Summer Camp Skyscraper

The entire Summer Camp Festival site got a facelift yesterday, and those who plan to be in attendance got a treat as well, some new artists:

Galactic
The Wood Brothers
Hot Buttered Rum
Melissa Ferrick
Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO)
Great American Taxi
Vince Herman
Brother’s Past

Toubab Krewe
Pnuma Trio
Bump

Any thoughts on the new additions? I’m very excited about the return of ALO. Galactic should be a good dance party. But, most importantly, Vince Herman, 2006 Summer Camp MC and 2006 10KLF badass, is returning, not only by himself apparently, but with his *amazing* band, Great American Taxi. These guys are a must-see, hands down.

Summer Camp 2007 Artist Update

Monday, February 5th, 2007

The first round of Summer Camp 2007 artists has been posted, and that means good things for readers of Burning Oak, because that means it’s about time to be starting the Summer Camp Artist Series. If you weren’t around before May of last year, I recommend check out last year’s series, which profiled every single artist present Friday to Sunday of Summer Camp 2006.

This year’s lineup includes:

Les Claypool
Keller Williams and the WMD’s (including Keith Mosely of String Cheese Incident, Gibb Droll, and Jeff Sipes)
Medeski Martin & Wood
The Wailers
Tea Leaf Green

New Monsoon
Oteil and the Peacemakers
Groovatron
Assembly of Dust
Family Groove Company
Cornmeal
U-Melt
Rev Peytons Big Damn Band

Chicago Afrobeat Project
56 Hope Road
Public Property
The Station

These artists are in addition to the originally announced moe., Umphrey’s McGee, and Keller Williams, who it appears will be playing solo and group sets.

Check out more info on the festival at SummerCampFestival.com.

Super Bowl Ads

Monday, February 5th, 2007

The only remark I have about yesterday’s game is becoming a little tired in Chicago:  “We’ll get ‘em next year.”

On another note, was it just me, or were yesterday’s Super Bowl commercials even harder to watch than the game?  They really were weak this year.

YouTube and sports.aol.com have most of the commercials, my personal favorites were almost all Bud Light ads, as well as a Sierra Mist one.  Here’s the links:

Bud Light Wedding Reception
Bud Light Carlos Mencia - Bud Light! “Bood Light” Bud Light! “Bood Light”
Bud Light Rock Paper Scissors - “I threw paper…” “I threw a rock.”
Bud Light HitchHiker - “It’s a bottle opener”
Sierra Mist Beard Combover - “It really makes me question your decision-making abilities, Ted”
Blockbuster Computer Mouse
